I bought this DVD for someone very special to me that has been in a series of relationships with abusive men. Her self esteem is so low, that she is always afraid to leave them because she fears she can’t make it on her own. I hoped seeing this movie would help her to see that there is a better life for, even if it involves going through difficult times. Since seeing this movie, she has filed for divorce, and forced her abusive husband out of the house. I think the film is a “must see” for any woman in an abusive relationship.

This movie downplays somewhat the severity of why some women go into seclusion as a means to get away from abusive husbands. I don’t feel the movie truly expresses the true fear why women go into hiding and take on another identiy. This movie was too soft of a message.

As a counselor, I was looking for a film to share with a client in the hope that it would help him develop some insight. I was basically familiar with LaPaglia’s work in “Without A Trace,” where the character is a nurturing, grumpy, teddy bear sort of person, so I did wonder how he might translate into an abuser. Yikes. This is the most realistic study I’ve seen of the thinking and actions of an abusive person, the rationalization. His performance is powerful, extremely unsettling. Family court judges ought to require this film for every domestic abuse case they see, so people can see themselves. It might effect some change in them. Mary Stuart Masterson’s character is fascinating also, true to life, brings out the impossible situation she’s in when deciding what to do. A film that grabs your emotions and leaves you with the feeling of having experienced the abuse, too. Gives an understanding of the total situation in abusive realtionships.
