Once An Eagle is the epic story of America in the 20th Century, told through the lives of two career soldiers, spanning the tumultuous years from WWI to the Vietnam Era. Based on the best-selling novel by Anton Myrer, Once An Eagle is one of the most acclaimed mini-series of all time, alongside “Winds of War” and “War and Remembrance.” Sam Elliott takes on the role of Sam Damon, a courageous and compassionate man who finds his caling leading his men in war and in pe… More >>

I read the book when it was first published (and a couple times since); and saw this series back in (was really that long ago?) 1976. Terribly disappointed in the latter because, even at a really long 7+ hours, it left out so much of the book. I understand, from reading a couple other reviews, that the book is required reading at West Point and with the Marines. Will the TV version now become required viewing in place of the book? I sure hope not (although Sam Elliott is an ideal Sam Damon).

Thirty five years ago I had the privilege of writing and producing the mini-series, “Once an Eagle”. It was one of the assignments I most cherished and I was extremely proud of the results. I won’t say it was easy. Anton Myrer had written a magnificent book and even given 9 hours, it wasn’t easy to try to capture everything he intended in those hundreds of pages. To some extent I succeeded. I still prize a letter I received from Mr. Myrer after the opening two hours aired, lauding the production and the respectful handling of his epic novel. He couldn’t have been more generous. The show aired, was rerun on the network, went briefly into syndication and then disappeared totally. I could never figure out why. Maybe it was because the left leaning powers that be didn’t want anything to do with a project that glorified war. Nonsense. If they knew anything about the mini-series or the book, they would have known it was anti-war. However it WAS pro-American, pro-freedom, pro-liberty and patriotic to its core. Maybe that was what was bothering them. I retired from the television business in 1996, having given it my all. One of my major disappointments at the time continued to be the dismissal of “Once an Eagle” and so you can understand the the pride I feel now that Anton Myrer’s classic novel is being brought back for a whole new generation of young Americans. In the ensuing years since retirement my patriotism has never waned and finally, in 2009, I became so fed up with what was happening in Washington at the hands of the Socialists ( or worse ) who had fooled an entire nation into voting for them, that I wrote a novel entitled “The Blood of Tyrants”. I followed it up this year with a second novel, “The Terror of Tyrants”. Both are exciting political thrillers with a lot to say about what is going on in our Capitol. Both are available through amazon.com or if you prefer, you can buy direct from [...]. These cpoies come personally signed by me. In the meantime, thanks to all of you, particularly Tom Hebert, who have been imploring Universal TV and NBC to release “Once an Eagle” on DVD. It is long overdue.

It was a long time ago ( too long), but I have such fond memories of the miniseries. I had seen Sam Elliott in “Lifeguard” just before this and thought it was great. When my dad( Peter S.Fischer ) said he cast Mr. Elliot in the main role, I knew it would be a quality work. My father was hired to adapt the book into a 9-hour script. A daunting task, but he pulled it off masterfully. I think it may have been the best production he ever did.
In 2009, he came out of retirement to write two novels, which are political thrillers that try not only to entertain,. but to try to show people the dangerous direction this country is going. I consider “The Blood of Tyrants”" and the “Terror of Tyrants” must reads for all Patriots who love this country and the freedom it represents.

This DVD is very special to me. I have eagerly awaited its coming for over 30 years, ever since “Once an Eagle” premiered on broadcast TV on NBC as a minseries in 1976-77. Tom Hebert, the man who made it possible for a new generation of Americans to experience “Once an Eagle” for the first time, deserves a special thanks from all patriotic Americans. The DVD transfer is excellent, although I am saddened at the complete lack of “extras” for such a seminal minseries. The editing is also a bit choppy. Aside from these two “nit-picks,” I can heartily recommend “Once an Eagle” to all Americans who believe that patriotism, duty, and honor must NEVER go out of style.
