David has a great voice but I still like him best when he is singing with the Gaither Vocal Band.

A while back, my brother was looking at this CD to buy for my mother’s birthday and left it on the shelf. I questioned his reasoning at first, but after listening I would have done the same. Don’t get me wrong. David Phelps has always been the singer that I have strived be, but I could hardly make it through the sample sound clips. After hearing Revelation, I was impressed at how he put his own spin on rather contemporary sounding songs, but he still had a rather classical sounding voice. He has lost the classical sound and has gone on to a more pop/mainstream sound. David, we love songs like “Live like a King” and “No more Night”. Come back to the Gaither Vocal Band.

David has one of the best voices I’ve ever heard. His previous albums musically allowed his voice to shine. “Revelation” contained fresh, original-sounding songs, and who can forget “End of the Beginning” from “David Phelps”? I can’t pinpoint my disappointment other than to say that most of these songs just sound like mainstream Christian pop. They sound fairly generic. Perhaps the record company is shooting for marketability which is unfortunate. “Gentle Savior” is the standout song and is among David’s best. I’m anxiously awaiting his next album. His talent deserves so much more.

We so enjoyed David when he sang with the Gaither vocal Band and became ardent fans. When I ordered this CD it was to try it out as several people in their evaluations said they were a little disappointed. We do not enjoy the more modern gospel music. We were also disappointed in this album because it no longer shows David in his best light. He’s just a better performer than this CD shows. David, wish you were still with the band.

Generally, a mature pop album. Less loud high notes than a typical Gaither concert.

Has a different feel to his “The Voice” album. I’ve never been crazy about his solo albums but… this one is much better than I expected it to be.

With his love sing Holy – A song you can easily bop your head to. Slightly rocky feel to it. Not neccessarily one of the strongest.

Something’s Gotta Change – A song with a typical CCM AC pop chorus. Properly follows the first track.

Life is A Church – Slight gospel tones with a gospel choir on this one. Starts off with an acoustic feel then builds up. Easy to see why it’s the title track.

That’s What Love is – Erm, my favourite for now but don’t ask me why. This is very well sung. It has an orchestra backed feeling to it.

Behold The Lamb – more Gaither-like sounding to me. He lets loose here and sangs!

Long time coming – Erm, David gets into a slight rap thingy here sounding like John Reuben? All in all, it surprisingly does work well.

Gentle Saviour – This song is calm, well sung and well written. He does really really sing here.

Visions of God – has an acoustic feel to it. The vocals are understated and suited for the accompanying instrumentals. No unneccessary shouting and high notes here.

Power – Another guitar laced pop tune, a bit catchy.

The Name Lives On – Here, time for intimacy. well sung and produced ballad. Here he lets loose and holds back on the vocals at the right points and so the worship feel is authentic. Easily a stand out.

Legacy of Love – Similar to the previous track. A well produced pop ballad. Good lyrics here and they are sure to touch touch your heart.
